Rewind: LSU 10, McNeese State 3

Alex Bregman's three-run, go-ahead homer in the sixth inning propelled LSU to a 10-3 victory against McNeese State in a non-conference game at The Box on Wednesday night.

McNeese second inning - With one out, Connor Lloyd doubled. After Lucas Quary flied out to centerfielder Andrew Stevenson, Lloyd scored on a single by Clay Payne. After Matt Gallier walked, Payne scored on a single by Cameron Toole. MC NEESE 2, LSU 0

LSU third inning - With two out, Christian Ibarra walked and Sean McMullen hit a two-run homer over the leftfield fence. MC NEESE 2, LSU 2

McNeese fourth inning - With one out, Quary hit a home run over the leftfield fence. MC NEESE 3, LSU 2

LSU sixth inning - Ibarra walked. After McMullen flied out to the leftfielder, Ibarra advanced to second on a hit-and-run single by Mark Laird. Bregman hit a three-run homer over the leftfield fence. LSU 5, MC NEESE 3

LSU seventh inning - With one out, Tyler Moore singled. Moore moved to third on a single by Stevenson. Moore scored when he slid under the tag of the catcher Toole on Ibarra's safety squeeze bunt. A single by McMullen loaded the bases. Stevenson and Ibarra scored on a pinch-hit single by Chris Sciambra. McMullen and Sciambra moved to third and second, respectively, when the leftfielder Payne bobbled the ball. After Bregman lined out to the first baseman, McMullen and Sciambra scored on a single by Kade Scivicque. LSU 10, MC NEESE 3

Although Bregman collected just one hit, it was a huge one. His three-run homer on a hit-and-run call erased a 3-2 McNeese lead in the sixth inning. The home run was the second of the season for Bregman, who now has 18 runs batted in. Bregman had been 0-for-17 prior to the home run. His last hit came in the Georgia game two Sundays ago. He lined out to the first baseman in his next at-bat.

Cody Glenn may have had his last chance to move into the weekend rotation. He couldn't last two innings. With a runner at second and two out in the second, Glenn failed to retire the seventh, eighth and ninth-hole batters in the lineup. Payne singled home Lloyd. He then walked Gallier on four pitches. Glenn then allowed a RBI single by Toole on a two-strike pitch. Glenn was removed after throwing balls on the first two pitches to Andrew Guillotte.

Alden Cartwright got of the second-inning jam by retiring Guillotte on a ground ball to the shortstop Bregman. After tossing a scoreless third inning, Cartwright gave up a one-out homer by Quary in the fourth which put McNeese ahead 3-2. Hunter Devall worked a scoreless fifth although he did allow a single and hit a batter with two out. Devall ended the threat by getting Lloyd to fly out to the rightfielder Laird. Kurt McCune, who picked up the victory, yielded just a two-out single by Gallier in the sixth - his one inning. Zac Person gave up one hit in the seventh - on a ball hit off his foot by Matt Williams. Parker Bugg allowed two base runners to reach base in the eighth on a single and a walk. He retired pinch-hitter Billy Sommers on a fly ball to the rightfielder Sciambra to end the inning. Kyle Bouman made his first appearance in nearly three weeks and struck out the one batter he faced in the ninth. Bouman's fast ball registered 88 miles per hour. Joe Broussard completed the game by retiring two of the three batters he faced on ground balls. He walked one hitter. The LSU bullpen worked 7.1 innings and allowed one run and six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The victory was No. 1,200 in Paul Mainieri's coaching career. . .LSU had the same nine players in the lineup as it did Sunday against Florida. Scivicque was the catcher, Moore was the first baseman and Connor Hale was the second baseman. . .McMullen's third-inning homer was certainly helped by the wind blowing out to leftfield. The homer was the third of the year for McMullen, who had two home runs all of last year. McMullen, who had a single, had his first two-hit game since March 23 against Georgia. He had been 1-for-17 since that game against the Bulldogs. . .Stevenson, who solidly hit the ball in all four plate appearances, had two singles. The last time Stevenson had two hits in a game was last Wednesday against Tulane. He had gone 1-for-8 in the Florida series. . .Scivicque extended his hitting streak to six games with his seventh-inning single. He is 8-for-23 in the hitting streak. . .Hale now has a four-game hitting streak after singling in the seventh. . .For the second straight game, Sciambra drove in two runs as a reserve. He hit a two-run homer against Florida on Sunday. . .Ibarra, who reached base three times, scored a career-high three runs. . .Jake Fraley and Ibarra were the only starters not to get a hit. . .LSU stranded four runners, two in scoring position. The Tigers were 5-for-7 with runners in scoring position. . .LSU had one hit - McMullen's homer - in the first five innings. The Tigers collected nine hits over the next three innings. . .McNeese starting pitcher Michael Desabrais allowed five runs and three hits in six innings. The first three Cowboys relievers - Cole Prejean, Tyler Erickson and Collin Kober - gave up five runs and six hits in two-thirds of an inning. . .Quary's homer was his team-leading fifth of the year. Quary is not a regular as he made just his 11th start of the season Wednesday. . .Lloyd and Gallier each had two hits for McNeese. . .The victory snapped a four-game losing streak and a five-game winless streak for LSU. . .The Tigers are 21-8-1, while the Cowboys are 16-12. . .The paid attendance was 10,534. The actual crowd was 4,076.

Paul Mainieri

"It did feel pretty good to finally win a game. It has been a while since we won a game. It has been a long week and that wears on you. The kids were really pressing. McMullen's homer loosened us up. Then, Bregman because it was him and what he was going through really loosened everybody up with his homer. We had some good at-bats after that."

"The homer was a big monkey off Bregman's back. Everybody has been making out about Bregman, but McMullen was 1-for-17 coming into the game. Two of our best guys were in a rut. It's hard to win games with that. I'm sure both homers were wind-aided, but who cares."

"I wanted to get Bouman in the game. He's not 100 percent. His ankle bothered him some (Tuesday). But, it didn't bother him when he threw pitches. I don't know how we can use him this weekend. I don't know if we extend him or just use him for a batter or two."

Sean McMullen
"When I hit the ball (on his home run), I thought it was just a fly ball. I realized when I was rounding first base how high the ball was. The leftfielder started drifting. I said 'it may go out.' Alex's hit was the one which popped the game open. Alex is the heartbeat of our lineup. He's a hitter. A hit like that sets the fire and ignites us. We had to find a way to score some runs. We tried to flush the last few games, but it did seem like a while since we won a game."

Alex Bregman
"I had the hit-and-run on the home run. I had felt comfortable by first two at-bats. I just wanted to let the ball get deep on me. I am just trying to play the game and have fun. Everybody came out to have fun playing the game we love. We were really set on not losing tonight. Coach (Mainieri) told us before the game that we were at the midway mark of the season. Once April hits, you have to enthusiastic and not treat it like a business."

LSU will play host to Mississippi State in the opener of a three-game Southeastern Conference series at The Box on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Bulldogs (20-10, 6-3), who are tied with Alabama, Florida and South Carolina, for first place in the SEC, have not played since taking two of three games from Arkansas last weekend. Aaron Nola (5-1) will be the Tigers' starting pitcher. The LSU-Mississippi State game will be broadcast on CSS/CST.
