Washington at Southern Cal Recap

Game Ticker

LOS ANGELES -- Frostee Rucker and top-ranked Southern California were determined to keep Pac-10 Conference foe Washington off the scoreboard.

Rucker forced a fumble and recovered another as the Trojans handed the Huskies their first shutout in 23 years, 38-0.

Washington (1-6, 0-4 Pac-10) mustered just 113 yards of total offense as it was blanked for the first time in 272 games - the longest streak in Division I-A. The Huskies had not been shut out since a 31-0 setback to UCLA on November 7, 1981.

LenDale White ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns and [/db]Matt Leinart[/db] threw for a pair of scores for USC (7-0, 4-0), which has won 16 consecutive games overall and 19 in a row at home.

The Trojans held just a 3-0 lead until Leinart connected on a 15-yard TD with Reggie Bush with 6:35 left in the first half. On the first play after the break, Trojans linebacker Matt Grootegoed jarred the ball loose from Washington tailback Kenny James and Rucker pounced on it, setting up White's three-yard TD run.

Leinart added a 29-yard TD pass to Jason Mitchell and White a two-yard scoring run in the third quarter and Desmond Reed capped the scoring with a 28-yard run with 1:57 remaining in the contest.

Leinart completed 24-of-42 passes for 217 yards and an interception for USC, which gained 441 yards.

Michael Braunstein, a redshirt freshman, missed a pair of field-goal attempts for Washington.
