Goodman wins 200m in track

Freshman Demiko Goodman won the 200 meters event this weekend for Georgia at the Illinois Health Alliance Classic in Champaign, Illinois. Goodman, a receiver on the football team who redshirted this past season, posted a time of 21.80. Illinois won the meet with 218.5 points. UGA came in second with 104, followed by Iowa with 93, Wisconsin with 57, and Syracuse with 50.0 points.

Goodman has a long history of excelling in track and field. As a senior in high school he was the 400 meters champion at the 2002 National Junior Olympics in Miami, earned the silver in the 400 at the IAAF World Young Championships in Candada in 2003, was 400 meter champion at the National Junior Olympics in Buffalo, N.Y., and was the State of Georgia region AAAAA champion at the 400 that same year. Additionally, he was named the South Metro Male Track Athlete of the Year as a senior. As a sophomore he won the 200 meters at the 2002 National Junior Olympics in Miami. As a junior he won the 400 meter championship at the 2002 National Junior Olympics in Omaha.

Goodman is expected to challenge for the two deep depth chart this spring. He currently weighs 188 pounds and is 6-foot-2, and is not expected to put on significant weight this spring.

"He works, he is a real hard worker, and he is a tremendously skilled athlete," Strength and Condition coach Dave Van Halanger told UGASports.com recently. "Most of one's size is eating habits. The guys need to eat with discipline. We work real hard in the nutrition area."

Goodman was rated a four star prospect by Rivals.com coming out of high school in Newnan, Ga. He was named to the Rivals.com Wide receivers 2004 (22), Rivals.com Southeast Elite 88 (47), and Rivals.com Georgia Top 50 2004 (14).
