Shockley Named To National Good Works Team

University of Georgia senior quarterback D.J. Shockley of College Park has been selected one of 11 Division 1-A football players nation-wide for membership on the 2005 American Football Coaches Association National Good Works Team.

Shockley is the ninth Georgia player named to the team since 1992 which is second most of any school in the country behind Nebraska's ten.

The annual team honors players for their dedication and commitment to community service.

"It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities."

Shockley has participated in numerous community service programs including Project REACH, which is recreation and educational activities for children with handicaps, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, and has assisted in raising funds for and distribution of Thanksgiving meals for needy family in the Athens area. He has also assisted with H.E.R.O., a volunteer program which assists children with AIDS. Shockley is a member of the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a student-athlete representative on the UGA Athletic Association Board of Directors.

Previous Georgia players chosen to the AFCA Good Works Team include Alex Millen, 1992; Travis Jones, 1993; Brian Smith, 1995; Matt Stinchcomb, 1997; Matt Stinchcomb, 1998; Brett Millican, 2000; Jon Stinchcomb, 2001; and David Greene, 2003.
