Atlanta junior QB a talent

College Park (Ga.) Westlake quarterback Cameron Newton is expected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the Southeast and one of the top overall prospects in the Atlanta area for the class of 2007.

At 6-foot-5, 220-pounds with good running ability, and a knack for completing tough passes, Newton will remind some of former Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell. That's sweet irony for fans on The Plains. If there is one team that seems to have his attention early, it's the Tigers.

"It's one of my childhood favorites," Newton said. "I like the prestige. I like how many times they throw the football."

Newton attended two Auburn home games during the season and was in Athens, Ga., for the Tigers 31-30 victory against the in-state Bulldogs. Newton said that the AU-UGA battle was the best college football game he saw this season.

While he is a dual-threat quarterback, Newton's passing prowess is what he believes is his strong point.

"I bring so much stuff to the table," he said. "I am big and agile. I can also hit the short range, medium range and long range throws.

"I have good pocket presence and pride myself on getting the job done."

Newton's running ability was showcased in his final game of the 2005 season. He scored three rushing touchdowns in a second round Class AAA playoff loss to Gainesville.

Georgia, Tennessee, Miami (Fla.), South Carolina and Virginia are also early teams to watch with regards to the race for Newton's signature.

"Basically I like all of those teams because they have a passing offense," Newton said.

He plans to attend the NIKE camp during the spring, along with several others.

"I want to get to as many as possible," he said.

Newton finished the 2005 season with 2,500 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
