PSU's Posluszny won't need surgery

Get the inside scoop on your favorite team:

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - All-American linebacker Paul Posluszny will not need surgery after partially tearing two ligaments in his right knee during Penn State's Orange Bowl victory.

He will be sidelined six to eight weeks, the school said Friday. The junior had said he was considering forgoing his senior year to enter the NFL draft, and it is unclear how the injury will affect his decision.

If he returns to Penn State, he probably will participate in spring practice, which starts in late March. That could ease coach Joe Paterno's task of replacing seven senior starters on defense.

Posluszny, the winner of awards for the nation's best defensive player and top linebacker, injured his posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, the school said.

He was carted off the field after he was flipped by blockers during the fourth quarter. The drive ended with Florida State making a field goal to tie it 16-16. The Nittany Lions won 26-23 in triple overtime.
