Pac-Tending 04-12-06

"But the reality is that student-athletes don't take the summer off."

- NCAA associate director of education outreach Mary Wilfert, commenting on NCAA plans to conduct drug testing during the summer months - outside of traditional seasons.

Things are beginning to resemble normalcy back at the Creek now that March Madness is over and that means, with feline stealthiness, Stanford returns to their usual spot atop the Director's Cup standings along with six Pac-10 schools in the Top 20.

Meanwhile, at NCAA HQ, the organization plans to conduct drug testing over the summer months with the focus being on football and baseball players - although any Division I athlete is subject to testing.

In additional rules actions, the Management Council will give consideration to legislative proposals that will officially begin the basketball season on the second Friday of every November, eliminate the one-time transfer exception in baseball and move financial aid awarding to an annual basis rather than term-by-term.

Washington

In baseball, senior outfielder Zach Clem and junior pitcher Tim Lincecum were named as the conference's player and pitcher of the week, respectively.

In women's crew, the Huskies were swept by the Cougars in the regular season series between the varsity eight boats.

Arizona

The academic penalty for the football team's poor APR [Academic Progress Rate] score was reduced from four scholarships to three after Arizona won an appeal on one of the unnamed players.

Junior guard Mustafa Shakur will make himself eligible for the NBA Draft but will not sign an agent, to preserve his eligibility for the NCAA.

UCLA

Senior kicker Justin Medlock was reinstated to the team after receiving his sentence for a misdemeanor drunk-driving charge from last year.

Arizona State

In men's hoop, redshirt freshman forward Chad Goldstein has left the team and will stay at ASU to pursue academic goals.

Stanford

Senior tight end Matt Traverso and senior safety Brandon Harrison have been suspended for spring practice for a violation of team rules.

In men's hoop, assistant coach Eric Reveno has left to become head coach at the University of Portland. Sophomore guard Tim Morris will transfer.

USC

Senior running back Hershel Dennis will miss the 2006 season with a knee injury and intends to apply for a sixth-year of eligibility.

WSU

In men's hoops, Middle Tennessee State assistant Matt Woodley was hired as an assistant coach.

In baseball, the Cougars lost to Gonzaga and went 1-2 against UCLA to move to 22-12 overall and 4-5 in conference play with a 92 RPI.

In track and field, junior Julie Pickler won the heptathlon at the Texas Relays and set the school's second-highest point total at 5,734.

Oregon
