USC offers Florida DT

Longwood (Fla.) Lyman defensive tackle Ian Williams is coming off a very productive junior season in which he racked up 83 total tackles, 23 tackles for loss, two sacks, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. His performance was strong enough to warrant several impressive scholarship offers this spring.

"My top schools are Auburn, Florida State, Florida, Miami, South Carolina, Clemson, Ole Miss and UCF," the 6-foot-1, 300-pound Williams said. "I have offers from each of those schools except for Florida State and Miami."

Williams, who bench presses 370 pounds, has taken visits to Auburn and Florida this spring and liked what he found at both places.

"Auburn is located in a very nice town, and all the people there were very nice. Their coaches are also down to earth. Florida is a great academic school, and they have a football program that's on the rise. They may even be on the verge of becoming a championship type team."

Both South Carolina and Clemson are trying to lure Williams north to the Palmetto State.

"South Carolina just offered me recently. I think Steve Spurrier is really going to bring their program up to a higher level. With Clemson, I'm real cool with their defensive line coach (Chris Rumph). I like how they've beaten FSU the last couple of years."

Ole Miss was the first to offer Williams, something he hasn't forgotten.

"That meant a lot to me when they offered. I like my recruiting coach from there. He says they want to compete with the top programs in the country, but they need better players to do it."

Williams will base his decision on several factors.

"Academics are first and athletics are second. I'll also look closely at my relationship with the coaching staff. The last thing will be how I interact with the players on the team and the teachers and all the people around the football program."

Williams is no hurry to make a decision.

"It will be sometime after my season is over. I want to take my official visits first."
