SC Class Of 2008 Top Prospects: Lower State

There is little doubt that South Carolina has become a hotbed for football recruiting, having two five-star players in last years's Rivals100, and sure to have at least three players inside the Top 100 again this year. SCVarsity.com will take a look around the state and glance at the balance of talent in each region. Today, we take a look at the top talent in the Upstate of South Carolina.

The upstate crop of athletes is a little more difficult to seperate in the Top Ten. J.T. Floyd, 5-11, 180lbs defensive back from J.L. Mann has the edge and is outstanding on both sides of the ball. He's committed to Tennessee but has offers from South Carolina, Michigan, and NC State as well. Could very well open his recruiting back up if the recent interest continues.

Greenwood quarterback Jay Spearman is the next on the list of Upstate Top Ten's. Close to a 40 inch vertical jump and a sub 4.5 40, Spearman is rated high as an athlete. Greenwood coach Shell Dula thinks he can compete for a quarterback job at the next level, but he's proven he can do well at other positions by working out as a wide receiver at the Nike Combine.

Below is a look at some of the top prospects from the Upstate area for the Class of 2008.

Upstate Top Ten
A.J. Green
6-4, 185, WR, Summerville High School
An SCVarsity.com All-Stater since his sophomore year, Green is one of the top wide receivers in the nation and ranked as the top prospect overall in South Carolina for the 2008 Class; had more than 1,200 yards as a junior with 14 touchdowns.

Recruiting update: Committed to Georgia.

Robert Quinn
6-5, 245, DL, Fort Dorchester High School
Spearman led his team to an improbable state championship, racking up over 1,000 rushing and over 1,000 yards passing along the way. He looked very good at Nike Camp working out as a wide receiver. Will be attending the SCVarsity.com All-State Football Combine on May12th.

Recruiting update: South Carolina has offered. Va Tech is close.

Andre Ellington
5-10, 170, RB, Berkeley High School
Rushed for more than 1,600 yards and fifteen touchdowns as a junior. He's a speedster and has great hands coming out of the backfield and navigates well through traffic.

Recruiting update: Has offers from Clemson, Kentucky, Mayrland, and South Carolina

Brandon Ford
6-4, 207, WR, Hanahan High School
A player that has not gotten a lot of exposure, but will generate interest once he's seen. He's a sleeper in the sense that he's under the radar right now, but he's too good to list as a sleeper. Big body, 4.6 speed, and has great hands. Outstanding track athlete as a sprinter and long jumper as well.

Recruiting update: No offers yet; look for interest to begin with Spring practice visits.

Reid McCollum
6-4, 205, QB, Summerville High School
Has good velocity on the ball and is somewhat advanced with his drops and footwork. He has above average accuracy and good size. Added plus for him is that he has A.J. Green to throw to.

Recruiting update: No offers yet, but several schools very interested and "near" offering.

Ashton Jordan
6-1, 190, RB, Stratford High School
One of the top returners for the Knights, Jordan played some fullback last year, sharing run duties with feature back G.J. Jordan. He's a north-south straight-line runner, but moves piles with good power and speed. Will be attending SCVarsity.com All-State Football Combine

Recruiting update: No offers

John Carnell
6-2, 210, QB, Hanahan High School
He's got a live arm, throws the deep ball and mid-range passes well, and has two years of experience under his belt as the starter for the Hawks. Passed for 2,973 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Recruiting update: No offers

Matt Futch
6-1, 275, OL, Goose Creek
Short side for the position but is solid with his performance. One of the top offensive linemen in the lower state. Benches 330, squats 480 and runs a 5.1 40 - good speed and quick feet.

Recruiting update: No offers.

John Weaver
6-2, 240, TE, Stratford High School
Pro-style quarterback with nice touch on the ball. Brennan accounted for nearly 1,700 yards of offense, 17 touchdowns in 2006.

Recruiting update: : No offers but not far off after solid showing at Elite 11 and Nike Camp.

Brandon Millhouse
5-9, 170, DB, Summerville High School
Three sport star for the Greenwave in football, basketball, and baseball. Collected 60 tackles and five interceptions last season for the Wave.

Recruiting update: No offers but has a lot of interest in him for baseball.  His brother, Tillman, is a starting cornerback for Citadel.
