Top Texans square off

The high school football season officially gets under way this weekend in the Lone Star State.

It kicks off with a pair of monster matchups in the Houston area. Four of the top 20 players in the newly released Rivals.com Texas Top 100 will go head-to-head.

At 7 p.m. tonight at Tully Stadium, Cy-Fair faces Houston Stratford. This game features Stratford quarterback Andrew Luck (No. 9 in the state), squaring off against Cy-Fair running back Sam McGuffie (No. 12).

Down the street at Rhodes Memorial Stadium, No. 11-ranked offensive lineman J.B. Shugarts of Klein will face off against Katy and running back Aundre Dean (No. 18).

Rivals.com will have full coverage of both games, plus coverage of the Tom Landry Classic Saturday at Texas Stadium in Irving. The state's No. 17 player - receiver Dan Buckner of Allen takes on Garland and its standout defensive end Chancey Aghayere (No. 4 in Texas).

Van running back Jermie Calhoun tops the Texas state rankings. The 6-foot, 210-pounder opens his season on Friday against Grand Saline. Calhoun is part of a trio of Oklahoma pledges that lead off the list. Behind Calhoun at No. 2 in the state is Keller (Texas) Fossil Ridge defensive end R.J. Washington. Paris offensive guard Stephen Good is No. 3.

Oklahoma has commitments from six players in the Texas top 25, including South Garland safety Joseph Ibiloye (No. 14), Gilmer athlete Justin Johnson (No. 22) and Liberty Christian School offensive lineman Ben Habren (No. 24).

Overall, there weren't many dramatic changes to the list.

Making a nice move up was four-star receiver Sedrick Johnson of Arp. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Texas A&M pledge climbed to No. 29. Another Aggie pledge, Lamar Harris of Gilmer is now ranked 32nd.

Dulles cornerback and Arkansas pledge Ugo Okpara moved onto the list at No. 59. Okpara had a strong summer, including a dominating performance at the Razorbacks' summer camp.

Also moving into the state ranking is Lee three-star dual-threat quarterback Jerome Tiller. The 6-foot-3, 184-pounder recently committed to Iowa State over Minnesota, Purdue, Stanford, Texas A&M, Kansas, Air Force and others. Tiller threw for 1,323 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior.
