Louisville's top LB declares for draft

Louisville's best linebacker, junior Lamar Myles, has left school and will declare for the NFL Draft according to a school official Friday morning. Myles announced his intention to declare for the draft on 790 WKRD radio Friday morning.

"I thoroughly enjoyed attending the University of Louisville, but the time is right for me to move on to the NFL," Myles said. "The coaching staff helped me improve as a player and I look forward to competing in the NFL."

Myles will be represented by Cleveland-based PlayersRep Sports Management.

Rumors of his entry into the NFL Draft had been floating around Louisville since the season ended in early December.

When a UofL official was asked about the rumor of Myles turning pro on Monday, the Louisville SportsReport was told that Myles was enrolled in classes and expected to compete in spring practice. That much was true.

But then something changed. The junior from Winterhaven, Fla., reported to school for the spring semester, began workouts with the team and then apparently left workouts earlier this week.

Myles finished the 2007 with 128 total tackles (76 solo), more than double any other player on the team. Next closest was junior cornerback Bobby Buchanan who finished with 54 total tackles. His eight tackles for a loss was second on the team, and he also recorded two sacks, two quarterback hurries and recovered three fumbles.

He was Louisville's strongest linebacker, bench-pressing more than 400 pounds, and he was also known as the Cards' fastest linebacker as well. Standing only 6-foot-1, 220-pounds, Myles doesn't have the prototypical size for an NFL middle linebacker, the position he played in college, but he could transition into an outside linebacker at the next level.

Myles is the second Louisville underclassmen to declare for the draft. Junior wide receiver Mario Urrutia announced his intention to turn professional earlier this month.
