4-star WR commits to TU

The University of Tulsa and their high-powered offensive machine landed a key recruit today, when 5-foot-8 and 170-pound wide receiver Damaris Johnson of Norco (LA) Destrehan High School committed to the Golden Hurricane. Johnson is rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com and the No. 28 athlete in the nation.

"I committed to Tulsa this afternoon," said Johnson. "I called Coach (Gus) Malzahn and told him. He was real excited."

Johnson held numerous offers and even received one while on his official visit to the Tulsa campus last week.

"I came up to Tulsa last Wednesday and left on Friday," he explained. "I was scheduled to visit TCU after Tulsa, but I cancelled that visit. I saw enough at Tulsa to convince myself that it was where I want to be."

"I had a good visit. They have nice facilities. But the main reason I chose them was the offense they run and Coach Malzahn. They want me to play wide receiver and run back kicks."

"In addition to Tulsa and TCU, I had offers from Memphis, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech., Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois," Johnson added. "While I was on my visit, Minnesota called and offered and tried to get me to visit, but I told them I was going to Tulsa."

As a senior at Destrehan, Johnson had 81 catches for 1,228 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing for 133 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries. He caught 59 passes as a junior for 1,116 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Johnson was extremely impressed with the Tulsa program, coaches and players and felt he will be able to come in and contribute early.

"Tulsa has some great receivers in their program," he concluded. "Having three 1,000 yard receivers in one season is amazing. I feel what I can bring next year is more speed. I consistently run a low 4.4-second forty yard dash. But what I do best is after I catch the ball. I'm pretty quick and elusive."

"With the way Tulsa throws the ball, it seems like a perfect fit for me."
