Cougs Get Offensive
Quarterbacks ruled the day for the Washington State University Cougar football team in their second spring scrimmage of the year - as both incumbent starter Gary Rogers and backup Kevin Lopina combined to go 19-of-29 for 236 yards with each tossing a touchdown pass.
Unlike the first scrimmage, where the Cougar defensive unit dictated play, the Wazzu offense was the main propellant of the action in the second scrimmage as they distributed the ball all over the field with 10 different receivers catching at least one pass and Daniel Blackledge leading all receivers with four catches for 70 yards. The rushing game complemented the passing, adding 91 total yards with Logwone Mitz carrying five times for 35 yards to lead the rushing contingent.
While the quarterbacks did not throw a single interception and there were no fumbles from the running backs, the defense was not completely shut out of the statistics as defensive linemen Matt Eichelberger and Andy Mattingly each had sacks with Eichelberger getting two and Mattingly getting one.
The Cougars will conclude their spring football session next Saturday, April 12, with the third and final scrimmage of the year at 11 a.m.
