Williams detained on suspicion of theft
Torri Williams has found trouble for the second time in a little more than a year.Boilermaker safety
Lafayette Police Department lieutenant James Taul said Monday morning that Williams, 21, was arrested at 11:39 p.m. May 7 at the Pay Less supermarket at 2200 Greenbush St. in Lafayette on suspicion of theft. No futher information was made available.
Williams has been released on bond.
This hasn't been the Texan's first run-in with the law.
In the early morning hours of April 30 last year, Williams, then 20, was arrested on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, after being present at the same nightclub where a melee broke out, resulting in the stabbing of teammate Selwyn Lymon.
As part of a plea agreement, Williams was sentenced Dec. 12, to a year's unsupervised probation, requiring him to, among other mandates, "Maintain good and lawful behavior," suspending further sentences of 60 days jail time and a $500 fine.
Court documents indicate any subsequent infractions could result in the revocation of that probation.
According to Tippecanoe County court records, Williams has also been charged on three separate occasions for driving with a suspended license.
Following the DUI arrest, Williams was suspended indefinitely by Coach Joe Tiller, but reinstated following spring practice.
According to a statement released by Purdue Monday, Tiller is aware of the situation and will "handle it in an appropriate manner."
Tiller just returned to West Lafayette Monday after a stint out of town, and left again to attend Big Ten meetings in Chicago, which run through Wednesday.
Recovering from his third major injury in as many years, Williams is hoped to be a major contributor this season at safety.
In his four years in the program, Williams has barely gotten an opportunity to play.
He played as a true freshman in 2004, but a broken leg and foot injury combined to cost him his 2005 season. Then a knee injury suffered in the '06 opener quickly ended his comeback. Last season, he ruptured a muscle in his heel mid-season at Michigan. This spring, he was said to have been recovered enough to play, but he was held out as a precaution.
