Team Preview: Greenwood Bulldogs
The Greenwood Bulldogs have been a team that has dominated Class 5A football over the past three seasons. With 4 State Championship Game appearences, and 3 wins, the Bulldogs have commanded and receieved respect on the gridiron.
The Greenwood vs Shiloh Christian game in Week 3 will be a game worth watching.
The Greenwood Bulldogs will have a young team this season, with only 2 returning starters on offense, and 3 returning on defense.
Coach Rich Jones has one of the toughest conditioning programs in the State, which could prove to help the inexperienced players be able to pull out some games in the 4th quarter after wearing down their opponants.
The team does have a great work ethic, and believe in Coach Jones and his system. Add the tradition of recent years, and the Greenwood Bulldogs could prove to be a contender in the playoffs, even with such a young team.
After posting a 8-2 regular season record, the Bulldogs played hard through the playoffs on their way to their 3rd straight State Championship. Their toughest game in the playoffs was in Round 2 against Pulaski Academy, a game they won by the score of 57-50.
Players to keep your eyes on for the Greenwood Bulldogs in the 2008 season include Senior WR Zach Turpin. The 6-foot-2, 176 pound senior has a 4.7 forty, and led the team in receptions last season with 59 catches for 1,155 yards and 18 touchdowns.Senior RB Evan Davis is 5-foot-7, 145 pounds. Dont let the small size full you. Davis has the ability to slip away from defenders, but can also pick up a block and go out on a passing route when needed. Michael Berry is a 6-foot-4, 200 pound senior defensive end who had 46 tackles, 7 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles last season. He is a player who can stop a play faster than it can get started. Kyle Pippin is 5-foot-10, and 180 pounds, Pippin recorded 57 tackles last season, and returned a fumble 19 yards for a touchdown against Pulaski Academy which helped the Bulldogs advance into round 3 of the playoffs.
The Greenwood Bulldogs have great coaching and tradition working for them, but the inexperience of the team could catch up with them.Coach Rick Jones and staff knows that their team will face some adversity this season due to losing several key players, including QB Tyler Wilson who graduated, and signed on to play for the Arkansas Razorbacks. ArkansasVarsity.com has Greenwood listed as the Class 5A Contender in the "2008 ArkansasVarsity.com Contenders and Sleepers". We feel that with the solid coaching, stamina of the players, and the tradition of Greenwood Football will kick in this season, and could help propel the Bulldogs to War Memorial Stadium for the 5th year in a row.
