Flashes out duel Owls

It wasn't easy, but Kent State was able to squeak out a 41-38 victory against the Temple Owls in front of 6,886 at Dix Stadium Wednesday night in a rare mid-week game.

At the beginning of the second quarter it looked as if the Flashes had made quick work of the Owls by building a 21-3 lead on a pair of touchdown runs by senior quarterback Julian Edelman and one by junior running back Eugene Jarvis, but the Owls refused to give up.

Temple (3-7, 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference) cut the lead to 21-17 by cashing in on a 21-yard touchdown run by Kee-ayre Griffin with over nine minutes to go and with a 32-yard Adam DiMichele touchdown pass to Bruce Francis on third-and-30 just before the end of the half.

Griffen rushed the ball 11 times for 56 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game in the second half with an injury.

DiMichele completed 17 of 29 pass attempts for 282 yards and three touchdowns.

In the third quarter, the two teams traded touchdowns. Travis Shelton returned the opening kickoff of the second half 92 yards to put Temple up 24-21. The Flashes responded with an Edelman 1-yard run, his third touchdown of the game, to go back on top 28-24. DiMichele then hit Jason Harper on a 35-yard scoring pass to retake the lead, 31-28.

The Flashes scored last in the third quarter when Edelman found Sam Kirkland in the middle of the end zone to take a 35-31 lead with 6:16 left in the quarter.

Edelman completed 18 of 26 pass attempts for 232 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He rushed for 144 yards on 22 carries. It is the fifth game in a row Edelman has rushed for over 100 yards and the sixth time he's done it this season.

In the fourth quarter, DiMichele found Harper again for his final touchdown pass, but a pair of crucial field goals by Kent State's Nate Reed, and clutch defense on Temple's last couple of possessions, put Kent State in a position to win the game.

"I couldn't be more proud of our football team. That was exactly what we needed," said Kent State head coach Doug Martin. "It was a great team win. Our defense struggled at times but at the end of the game they made plays and they got stops and secured the win for us."

Harper ended the night with 10 receptions for 209 yards. The last receiver to have 200 yards receiving against Kent State was Marshall wide receiver Randy Moss.

Kent State's victory over Temple marked the Golden Flashes first victory at home over an NCAA FBS opponent since they defeated Eastern Michigan in 2006.

The Golden Flashes (3-7, 2-4 in the MAC) outgained the Owls, 561-354. Both Edelman and Jarvis rushed for over 100 yards. Jarvis gained 185 yards on 34 carries and scored one touchdown.
