2020 RB Zach Evans gives reaction to opening recruitment with LSU offer

2020 Galena Park-North Shore running back Zachary Evans is an understandably unfamiliar name in recruiting, but that won’t be the case for much longer after he opened up his recruitment with an offer from LSU over the weekend.

Equally as impressive is the level-headed approach Evans has come back to after the initial excitement from the big news subsided.

“It was like, this just happened,” he said. “[Getting the offer] gave me a feeling of ease, but told me now I can’t ease up. It was an amazing feeling.

“My attitude now is to keep striving,” he added. “After this one, if I am able to get more offers I just need to keep putting in more hard work and dedication. I have to keep working hard, I can’t let up now because now it’s like most people want what I have - as soon as you get comfortable, or start easing up, somebody else is coming for your spot.”

The reasonable expectation is other teams will follow in with offers of their own, and as Evans continues to make appearances in events in the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, it’s not lost on him that LSU is a program known for traditionally getting the most out of its talent at his position.

“LSU produces great running backs,” he said. “I was just thinking, now one of them could be me. Now it’s like one of the schools that I have been dreaming of, one that I had been thinking about going to, they just offered me. It’s really a rush.”

Evans didn’t have to wait long to hear from 2017 Rivals100 LSU commit and teammate K’Lavon Chaisson after he found out about his offers from the Tigers. The daily head-to-head battles they had in practice built a relationship and Chaisson reinforced the mentality that Evans has as his recruitment moves forward.

“When you’re going up against someone every day that has been doing this, and you start talking to them more, you get pretty close,” he said. “He told me congratulations. He told me to stay humble and keep practicing my craft and he said to not work for perfection, but work for achievement. He said you have to achieve your goals step-by-step; don’t try to knock them all out all at once.”

As LSU had been an offer Evans he was dreaming of, he stopped short of naming any other specific teams he’d like to pick up subsequent offers from. With plenty of time left in his recruiting process, he’s more concerned about his future opportunity than a specific destination.

“I’m blessed to get offered from any school,” he said. “It’s free education and I can keep striving, so I can’t get too choosy about it. I’m just blessed to have them.”
