LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri has continually talked about the history of the program since he took over as head coach in the summer of 2006.

Mainieri spent his first two years coaching the Tigers at the original Alex Box Stadium. The university is preparing for the demolition of the old facility. LSU is making available memorabilia from the Old Box by means of an on-line auction.
LSU has set up the web site www.AlexBoxAuctions.net for fans to have the opportunity to bid on items from the old baseball stadium. Some items can be purchased at a certain price by fans.
"I am the custodian of a program which reeks with history," Mainieri said. "Since Skip (Bertman) became coach, so many people flocked to Alex Box Stadium.
"A love affair has grown between the stadium and thousands and thousands of people. I have gained a great appreciation for what the stadium means to a lot of people."
The sale and auction is being run by the Tiger Athletic Foundation, which recently was approved to handle the demolition of the stadium. The TAF has partnered with Maxon Media to manage the sale and distribution of the memorabilia.
The 2008 season gold-seat ticket-holders will have a chance to purchase their own seat for $500 each. Those seats can be upgraded into a collector's piece.
Gold-seat ticket-holders have until Nov. 20 to buy their seats. Any remaining gold seats after that date will be made available to the general public through the on-line auction.
The aluminum bleacher seats from the grandstand are available as wall-mounted displays for $199 each. Infield dirt from The Old Box is available in a frame with a numbered print depicting the last game in the stadium for $299.
A framed photo of the 2008 Tulane game along with encapsulated dirt can be purchased for $199. A desktop collectable wood box containing infield dirt can be purchased for $85. Framed segments of the backstop net from the stadium are available for $149 each.
"I remember people grabbing scoops of dirt after the last game," Mainieri said. "Sods of grass were being pulled up. The come-from-behind victory in game two against Cal Irvine and the blowout victory in game three are forever etched in my mind."
A number of items will be available by the on-line auction. Some of those items are the "Baseball At The Box" sign which was on the front of the press box, the foul poles, the outside gates, the cover of the Intimidator sign and the outfield wall distance numbers.
"In my short tenure, I have realized that people who are supporters of LSU love to wrap their arms about the tradition of LSU," Mainieri said. "This auction is an opportunity for people to buy into a portion of the great LSU baseball history."
