LSU Scrimmage recap

With the defense missing three starters, Zach Mettenberger and the offense enjoyed a good day during LSU's third spring scrimmage Saturday in Tiger Stadium.

Defensive end Jermauria Rasco, cornerback Jalen Mills and safety Ronald Martin did not participate in the scrimmage. Mettenberger completed 15 of 26 passes for 276 yards and six touchdowns. Most of the scrimmage consisted of red-zone and tight-zone plays and third-down situations.

Mettenberger connected with Jarvis Landry for a 47-yard touchdown pass and with Odell Beckham on a 36-yard scoring pass. Jeremy Hill caught a screen pass from Mettenberger and ran 47 yards for a touchdown.

WHAT LES MILES HAD TO SAY

"We really had a really productive week of practice, capped with a good scrimmage. The defense played without three starters so that hampered us on that side of the ball. We had good effort on both sides of the ball and the offense continues to get better. Zach is playing with a lot of confidence.

"The first defense played well despite being without three key players. We are getting a lot of young players on defense some valuable reps this spring. We are down to our final three practices this spring and we need to get the most out of them.

"We've had 12 very productive practices so far. We need to close out next week with three good days of work. Then, we'll turn our attention to the offseason conditioning program. I like where we are right now. The key is to get better each time we take the field. So far, this team has done that this spring."

LSU will practice Tuesday and Thursday before conducting its spring game next Saturday at 2 p.m.
