BATON ROUGE – LSU added another NFL coaching veteran to its football staff on Friday as Greg McMahon has been named special teams coordinator for the Tigers, head coach Ed Orgeron announced.

The addition of McMahon gives the LSU coaching staff a combined 65 years of NFL experience.

“Coach McMahon brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the area of special teams to our staff,” Orgeron said. “He’s had success at the highest level of football, helping the Saints win a Super Bowl, and I know that with Greg working daily with our special teams, we will show marked improvement.”

McMahon spent the 2017 season as analyst for the Tigers.

“It’s an honor to work at LSU and it’s an honor to be part of Coach Orgeron’s staff,” McMahon said. “This is one of the top programs in the country and I can’t wait to get started.”

Prior to serving as an analyst for LSU in 2017, McMahon spent 11 years with the New Orleans Saints, the first two as assistant special teams coordinator followed by nine seasons as special teams coordinator. McMahon was part of the New Orleans staff that led the Saints to the Super Bowl title during the 2009 season.

McMahon, a graduate of Eastern Illinois, served on the coaching staff at Illinois for 13 years before transitioning to the NFL. At Illinois, McMahon coached wide receivers for five years and then spent eight years coaching special teams and the tight ends. McMahon was part of the 2001 Illinois staff that won the Big 10 and faced LSU in the Sugar Bowl.
