Rewind: Georgia 2, LSU 2

LSU left the bases loaded in the 13th inning and settled for a 2-2 tie with Georgia Sunday afternoon in a Southeastern Conference game which was called due to the league's travel regulations.

HOW THEY SCORED

Georgia first inning - Nelson Ward doubled and moved to third on an infield single by Conor Welton. Ward scored on a double by Hunter Cole. Welton scored on Jared Walsh's ground out to shortstop Alex Bregman. GEORGIA 2, LSU 0

LSU fifth inning - Mark Laird singled and went to second on Bregman's sacrifice bunt. After Sean McMullen flied out to the leftfielder, Laird scored on a double by Kade Scivicque. GEORGIA 2, LSU 1

LSU seventh inning - Kramer Robertson and Laird walked. Robertson scored on a single by Bregman. GEORGIA 2, LSU 2

LSU WASTED SCORING OPPORTUNITIES

First inning - With two out, McMullen doubled. Scivicque grounded out to the third baseman.

Second inning - Conner Hale singled and Christian Ibarra was hit by a pitch. Andrew Stevenson popped out to the pitcher on a bunt. Jared Foster grounded out to the third baseman and Robertson flied out to the centerfielder.

Fourth inning - With one out, Ibarra singled and Stevenson was hit by a pitch. Foster forced Stevenson at second with a ground ball to the third baseman. Robertson flied out to the leftfielder.

Ninth inning - Robertson singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Laird. After Bregman was intentionally walked, McMullen grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

Tenth inning - Scivicque walked. After Hale popped out to the catcher on a bunt, pinch-runner Jake Fraley moved to second on a wild pitch by David Sosebee. Ibarra was intentionally walked. Stevenson flied out to the leftfielder. After pinch-hitter Chris Chinea walked, Robertson lined out to the centerfielder.

12th inning - With two out, Ibarra singled and went to second on a wild pitch by Jarrett Brown. Stevenson reached on an error by the shortstop Ward, who threw Ibarra out at the plate.

13th inning - Pinch-hitter Dakota Dean was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Dylan Cole. Dean moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Robertson. Laird and Bregman were intentionally walked. McMullen lined out to the leftfielder and Fraley flied out to the centerfielder.

TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYER

Laird reached base four times on two singles and two walks - one intentional. Laird began the fifth with his first hit and came around to score LSU's first run. He drew a walk in the seventh inning when the Tigers scored their second run. Laird was 5-for-11 in the series.

STARTING PITCHER

Kurt McCune got his first start of the season and didn't last two innings. The first three Georgia batters all got hits - a double by Ward, a single by Welton and a RBI double by Cole. McCune minimized the damage as he retired the next three hitters on two ground outs to Bregman and a strikeout. The Bulldogs scratched out one more run. McCune yielded an infield single by Brandon Stephens to begin the second. Foster made a diving catch on Skyler Weber's line drive to leftfield. Following a sacrifice bunt by Cody McCance, McCune was taken out of the game with the top of the Georgia lineup coming to the plate.

BULLPEN

The Tigers bullpen was spectacular with 11.1 scoreless innings. LSU relief pitchers allowed just three hits, walked five and struck out eight. Henri Faucheux kept LSU in the game with a season-high 3.1 innings of long relief. Faucheux, whose longest previous outing was two innings against Southern, permitted two base runners on walks. He walked his first batter, but struck out Welton with runners at first and third to end the inning. Faucheux then retired nine of the next ten batters he faced. Bugg, who had thrown no more than 1.2 innings this season, followed Faucheux with four scoreless innings. In two innings, Bugg stranded a runner in scoring position. In the sixth, Bugg got Stephens to fly out to the rightfielder Laird with a runner at third and two out. In the next inning, Bugg struck out Welton with a runner at second and two out. Bugg, who struck out two, retired the last seven batters he faced. Broussard started the tenth and walked the leadoff batter. With a runner at second and two out, Broussard intentionally walked Cole. Lefthander Zac Person was called on to pitch to lefthanded-hitting Jared Walsh. Person got Walsh to ground out to him. Person threw two more innings for his longest outing of the season. With runners at first and second in the 11th, Person struck out Weber and Mike Bell to end the threat. After allowing a leadoff single by Walsh in the 13th, Person was replaced by Nate Fury. Georgia put runners on first and second before Fury struck out Stephens and got Weber to pop out to Bregman.

NOTES

Due to Georgia's travel plans - a commercial flight out of New Orleans, there was a 3:45 p.m. curfew. In SEC Sunday games, there is no curfew if the visiting travels by bus or by a charter flight. . .The LSU batting order was shaken up Sunday with Bregman not batting third for the first time in his career. Bregman was the No. 2 hitter in the lineup. He had batted third in the first 91 games with the Tigers. McMullen batted third with Laird taking over the leadoff spot. This was the first time McMullen batted third and the second time Laird led off in their LSU careers. . .Scivicque was the catcher with McMullen the designated hitter. Foster started in leftfield. . .The Tigers had three bad base-running plays. With runners at first and third and no outs in the seventh, Laird didn't break from third when McMullen hit into a 3-6-3 double play. Ibarra was thrown out at the plate in the 12th when he tried to score from second base on an error by the shortstop Ward. Ibarra anticipated that Ward was going to throw to first base after bobbling Stevenson's grounder. But, Ward held the ball and easily threw out Ibarra. In the 13th, Dean did not attempt to score on McMullen's line drive to the leftfielder. Dean thought third base coach Will Davis said 'no, no.' Davis said 'go, go.' . .McMullen extended his hitting streak to six games with his first-inning double. . .Bregman, who is in a big slump, put down the first sacrifice bunt of his LSU career in the fifth inning. Bregman got just his second hit in the series with a run-scoring single in the seventh. He has three hits in six SEC games. . .Robertson snapped a 0-for-17 slump with a leadoff single in the ninth. . .McMullen and Ibarra also had two hits. . .LSU stranded 17 runners, 11 in scoring position. The Tigers were a miserable 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position. . .After scoring ten runs on 14 hits in the Vanderbilt series, the Tigers scored eight runs on 25 hits against Georgia. . .Bulldogs starting pitcher Patrick Boling gave up two runs and seven hits in six-plus innings. . .Three Georgia relievers - Sosebee, Brown and Cole - gave up four hits in seven innings. . .Bulldogs pitchers did not strike out a batter in 13 innings. . .Georgia was 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position. The Bulldogs stranded 12 runners, seven in scoring position. . .Ward was the only Georgia player with two hits. The Bulldogs had 15 hits and scored three runs in the series. . .The tie was the first for LSU in six seasons. The Tigers and Georgia played to a 10-10, 12-inning tie in 2008. Following that tie, LSU started a 23-game winning streak. . .LSU is 20-4-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the SEC. The Tigers are in fourth place, one-half game behind Auburn, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Georgia is 14-10-1 overall, 1-4-1 in the SEC. The Bulldogs are in 13th place - ahead of only Missouri. . .The paid attendance was 10,375. The actual crowd was 4,393. The actual crowd for the three-game Georgia series was 18,913.

"This sure feels like a loss. I am so proud of our relief pitchers. It was amazing performance by those guys. If you told me before the game that we would hold Georgia to two runs in 13 innings, I would not have believed you. Everybody, but our starting pitcher, did a good job. We had opportunities. We just couldn't get runs across."

"Unfortunately, we only scored two runs. We had some bad breaks, some of our own doing. We had several base-running mistakes. We hit some line drives - McMullen, in particular when the runner (Dean) didn't break. Robertson also hit a line drive caught by the centerfielder. It is going to be hard for us to win a lot of SEC games if Alex Bregman doesn't hit. Georgia's pitching was underrated. It was better than I expected with their earned run average. I felt like this was a game we could have or should have won. We just have to move on."

LSU will play Tulane at Turchin Field in New Orleans on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Green Wave (12-11) won two of three games from Middle Tennessee this weekend. Mainieri is undecided on his starting pitcher.
