Rewind: LSU 2, Mississippi State 1

Joe Broussard registered his first two-inning save of the season as LSU edged Mississippi State 2-1 in a Southeastern Conference game on Saturday night at The Box.

HOW THEY SCORED

Mississippi State fourth inning - With one out, Brett Pirtle walked and moved to second on a wild pitch by Jared Poche. After Seth Heck struck out, Derrick Armstrong reached on catcher's interference by Chris Chinea. Pirtle scored on a single by Demarcus Henderson. MISSISSIPPI STATE 1, LSU 0

LSU sixth inning - With one out, Mark Laird singled and Alex Bregman reached on an error by pitcher Ross Mitchell. Laird scored on a single by Kade Scivicque. Bregman, who went to third on Scivicque's single, scored on a sacrifice fly to the leftfielder by Chinea. LSU 2, MISSISSIPPI STATE 1

LSU WASTED SCORING OPPORTUNITIES

First inning - Sean McMullen doubled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Laird. Bregman walked. McMullen was thrown out at the plate on Scivicque's grounder to the third baseman. Chinea forced Scivicque on a ground ball to the second baseman.

TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYER

Scivicque had the most important hit of the game for LSU with his run-scoring single in the sixth inning which tied the score at 1-1. Bregman moved to third base on Scivicque's hit and then scored the winning run on Chinea's sacrifice fly. Scivicque, who had a single in the fourth, had two of the Tigers' five hits off Mitchell.

STARTING PITCHER

Poche delivered a quality start as he allowed just one unearned run and three hits in six innings. Poche was responsible for the one Mississippi State runner who scored to get into scoring position. Poche walked Pirtle and then threw a wild pitch. With two out, Armstrong reached on catcher's interference against Chinea. Henderson followed with a two-out run-scoring single. Poche got out of the inning by getting Zack Randolph to fly out to the rightfielder Laird. In two other innings, Poche stranded runners in scoring position. With runners at second and third and one out in the second, Poche struck out Henderson and got Randolph to ground out to third baseman Christian Ibarra. In the fifth, Poche issued a two-out walk to Alex Detz and wild-pitched him to second. But, Poche retired Wes Rea on a pop up to second baseman Kramer Robertson. Poche, who walked two, recorded six strikeouts in picking up his sixth victory of the season.

BULLPEN

Alden Cartwright was the first of three relief pitchers. He retired Henderson on a ground ball to Robertson and walked Randolph. Lefty Zac Person got out of the seventh inning by getting Matt Britton to hit into a force play and by striking out Jake Vickerson. Person walked Detz to start the eighth. Showing the importance of the game, Coach Paul Mainieri went to Broussard to get six outs. Broussard did what was asked of him as he recorded his seventh save of the season. In the eighth, Broussard got a pair of fly ball outs before yielding an infield single by Heck. Broussard retired Armstrong on an inning-ending ground ball to the shortstop Bregman. Broussard had a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts.

NOTES

Chinea, who usually catches when Aaron Nola pitches, was behind the plate with Scivicque the designated hitter. Conner Hale played first base with Robertson at second base. McMullen and Andrew Stevenson were the only left-handed hitters in the lineup against the lefty Mitchell. . .McMullen, Laird and Ibarra were the only players other than Scivicque to get a hit. . .LSU had a runner past first base in just two innings - the first and the sixth. . .The Tigers stranded five runners, one in scoring position. LSU was 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position. . .Mitchell walked one and struck out one. . .Mississippi State had just four hits. The Bulldogs have six hits and one unearned run in the first two games of the series. . .Mississippi State stranded eight runners, five in scoring position. The Bulldogs were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. . .LSU has clinched the series by winning the first two games. The Tigers have won eight straight series against Mississippi State since Mainieri became coach. . .Mississippi State coach John Cohen was ejected from the game in the third inning. . .LSU is 23-8-1 overall, 5-5-1 in the SEC. The Tigers are tied with Arkansas and Georgia for seventh place in the overall SEC standings. . .Mississippi State is 20-12 overall, 6-5 in the SEC. "The story of the game was definitely Jared Poche. He was matched against Mississippi State's best pitcher and I think he took it personally, He competed extremely hard. He got his curve ball over for strikes and led us to a very important win. Mississippi State has a great program, and to win a series over them for eight straight years is a significant accomplishment. I just hope we can continue to play well this weekend and finish the series on a positive note tomorrow."
