TURNING POINT
TCU pulled within three points midway through the fourth quarter on a 39-yard field goal by Oberkrom. On the ensuing kickoff, Beckham returned the ball 75 yards to TCU's 25. That return set up a 20-yard touchdown pass from Mettenberger to Landry. That score gave LSU a two-possession lead.
LSU KEY OFFENSIVE PERFORMERS
Improved LSU offenseClick A handful of players turned in productive nights for the Tigers. Mettenberger completed 16 of 32 passes for 251 yards and the game-clinching touchdown to Landry. With Jeremy Hill suspended, Magee and Blue combined for 184 rushing yards. Magee gained a career-high 95 yards on 13 carries. He scored on runs of 52 and three yards. Blue carried the ball 19 times for a hard-earned 89 yards. Then, both Beckham and Landry cracked the 100-yard receiving mark. Beckham gained 118 yards on five catches, while Landry gained 109 yards on eight receptions. Here to view this Link.
LSU KEY DEFENSIVE PERFORMERS
Three Tigers defenders led the way with five tackles apiece - cornerback Jalen Mills, safety Craig Loston and end Jermauria Rasco. Mills intercepted a pass and broke up another throw. Loston made one pass breakup. Rasco was credited with half-a-sack. Other noteworthy outings came from tackle Ferguson and end Danielle Hunter. Ferguson had four tackles - one behind the line of scrimmage - and one quarterback-hurry. Hunter had four tackles - including 1½ for losses - and forced a fumble.
LSU MISSED SCORING OPPORTUNITIES
Every time LSU moved into TCU territory, it scored points. But three times, the Tigers had to settle for field goals after reaching the Horned Frogs' 10. On LSU's first series, Mettenberger threw incomplete passes to tight ends Dillon Gordon and DeSean Smith with the ball at TCU's 4. The Tigers started from the Horned Frogs' 10 after James Wright recovered a fumble on the kickoff. But, three plays lost one yard. Again, there were two Mettenberger incompletions - one being an end-zone drop by Travin Dural. Finally, late in the first half, LSU reached TCU's 2. Three plays netted no yards.
LSU CRITICAL MISTAKES
Besides not capitalizing on red-zone opportunities, LSU permitted TCU to hang in the game due to special teams and defensive mistakes. With the Tigers ahead 13-3, Catalon returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. In the third quarter, LSU had a 23-10 lead and apparently had forced a TCU punt. However, Ferguson was penalized for roughing Boykin to keep the drive alive. Five plays later, Catalon ran 26 yards for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter with the Tigers again holding a 13-point lead, Blue lost a fumble at LSU's 6. Two plays later, James ran five yards for a touchdown to cut the Tigers' lead to six points at 30-24.
KEY STATISTICS
LSU outgained TCU by a nearly 200 yards (448-259). Both teams had success returning kickoffs. The Tigers averaged 34 yards on four returns, while the Horned Frogs averaged 33.8 yards on five returns. LSU had a big advantage in plays (80-54) and time of possession (36:01-23:59). The Tigers converted 13 of 19 third-down situations. Mettenberger averaged nearly 16 yards per pass completion. Delahoussaye was a perfect 3-of-3 on field goals and 4-of-4 on extra points.
NOTES

Welter. . .LSU has now won 42 consecutive regular season games against non-Southeastern Conference opponents. . .Dural made the first catch of his career early in the first quarter. . .Magee's 52-yard touchdown run was the longest rush of his career and the longest rushing touchdown in the Cowboys Classic. . .Catalon's kickoff return for a touchdown was just the second against LSU since Les Miles became coach in 2005. Andre Debose of Florida returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown against the Tigers in 2010. . .Pachall passed for just 75 yards as he was 9-of-16. Boykin was a little more effective with his ability to run the read option. Boykin accounted for 83 yards - 70 through the air and 13 on the ground. . .The paid attendance was 80,230.
WHAT THE HEAD COACH HAD TO SAY
LSU coach Les Miles: "I certainly enjoyed the victory. It was a sloppy opener at times for us. Things that we could do to improve certainly made a very significant difference in the game. Cam Cameron made his debut at LSU and did a very strong job. There were a couple of balls dropped that we would have liked to have back and there was a fumble here or there. We could have had a more distinctive attack on the ground. But, we were much better on offense."
NEXT UP
LSU will play host to UAB next Saturday at Tiger Stadium. The Blazers lost 34-31 in overtime to Troy on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
