Rewind: LSU 4, Vanderbilt 2

LSU took advantage of two errors to score four eighth-inning runs and rallied for a 4-2 victory against Vanderbilt in the Southeastern Conference opener at Hawkins Field in Nashville on Friday night.

HOW THEY SCORED

Vanderbilt second inning - Rhett Wiseman and Vince Conde singled. Chris Harvey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wiseman scored on a sacrifice fly to rightfielder Mark Laird by pinch-hitter Ro Coleman. VANDERBILT 1, LSU 0

LSU eighth inning - With one out, Christian Ibarra singled and Tyler Moore walked. Pinch-hitter Sean McMullen flied out to the leftfielder. Pinch-hitter Jake Fraley reached safely on a throwing error by third baseman Xavier Turner to load the bases. Pinch-runner Jared Foster and Moore scored on a single by Andrew Stevenson. After a wild pitch by Brian Miller, both Fraley and Stevenson scored on a throwing error by second baseman Dansby Swanson on Laird's ground ball. LSU 4, VANDERBILT 1

Vanderbilt eighth inning - With two out, Wiseman reached on a two-base error by the first baseman Moore when he failed to catch shortstop Alex Bregman's throw. Wiseman scored on a single by Conde. LSU 4, VANDERBILT 2

TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYER

Stevenson had the clutch hit in the game - a two-run, two-out single off Miller which tied the score at 2-2 in the eighth inning. Stevenson had struck out three times against Vanderbilt starting pitcher Tyler Beede. Stevenson extended his hitting streak to 16 games. He has a hit in every game in which he has had an official at-bat this season.

STARTING PITCHER

Aaron Nola pitched exceptionally well as he allowed just one run and six hits before being replaced with two out in the seventh inning. Nola, who walked two, tied his career-high with 12 strikeouts. Nola held Vanderbilt to one run after it loaded the bases with no outs in the second. A run scored on a sacrifice fly before Nola struck out John Norwood and got Swanson to fly out to leftfielder Chris Sciambra. The Commodores put a runner in scoring position in the first and fifth innings. Zandel Wiel doubled and stole third with two out in the first. Nola retired Turner on a ground ball to Bregman. Coleman led off the fifth with a double. After Norwood popped out to Moore on a bunt, Nola walked Swanson. Nola ended the threat by striking out Bryan Reynolds and Wiel.

BULLPEN

Zac Person, who got credit for his first victory, took for Nola with a runner at first and two out in the seventh. Swanson, who walked, stole second. He was stranded in scoring position when Person struck out Reynolds. Parker Bugg started the eighth with LSU ahead by three runs. Bugg was headed for a 1-2-3 inning before Moore committed an error at first base. Bugg then yielded a RBI single by Conde. Bugg stopped the damage there by striking out Harvey. Bugg got Coleman on a fly ball to the centerfielder Stevenson to start the ninth. Joe Broussard recorded his fourth save by striking out Norwood and Swanson.

NOTES

McMullen was unavailable to start because of an illness. He did pinch-hit in the eighth inning. Stevenson batted first in the lineup instead of McMullen, while Sciambra started in leftfield. Ibarra, who missed the previous two games with a hamstring injury, was back in the lineup at third base. Chris Chinea was the catcher and Kade Scivicque was the designated hitter. Moore started at first base with Connor Hale at second base. . .Bregman extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a fourth-inning single. Bregman is 18-for-42 during the hitting streak. . .McMullen, who flied out in his pinch-hitting appearance, had his hitting streak end at five games. . .LSU only had three base-runners outside of the eighth inning. Two of those runners were thrown out on the front end of ground-ball double plays. . .Beede retired 11 consecutive hitters between Bregman's single in the fourth and Ibarra's infield hit in the eighth. Beede allowed two unearned runs and three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. . .LSU stranded just one runner - Bregman at first base in the fourth. The Tigers were 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position. . .LSU pitchers recorded 17 strikeouts. . .Reynolds struck out four times, while Harvey fanned three times. . .There was only one earned run in the game - the run off Nola in the second. . .LSU extended its winning streak to eight games. The Tigers are 17-2 overall. LSU won its conference opener for just the fourth time in Paul Mainieri's eight seasons as coach. . .The loss ended Vanderbilt's nine-game winning streak. "In my eight years at LSU, that had to be one of the greatest games I've seen. Nola and Beede were both brilliant on the mound and we made a tremendous comeback late in the game. It was a complete team victory. We used every position player we had in the dugout to win the game. That hit by Stevenson demonstrates the beauty of baseball and its power of redemption. Andrew struck out three times, but he still comes through with the game-winning hit."
