TURNING POINT
LSU KEY OFFENSIVE PERFORMERS
Mettenberger completed 16 of 19 passes for 282 yards and a school-record five touchdowns. In the first half, Mettenberger was 13-of-16 for 226 yards. Of his three second-half completions, two went for touchdowns. Both Beckham and Landry caught five passes. Beckham had his second straight 100-yard receiving game with 136 yards.
LSU KEY DEFENSIVE PERFORMERS
Linebackers Lamin Barrow and Lamar Louis each made seven tackles. In his first playing time at cornerback, Tre'Davious White was credited with six tackles. White played the entire second half at cornerback instead of Jalen Collins. End Jermauria Rasco made six tackles, including one sack, and registered two quarterback-hurries. Micah Eugene, who played a lot of safety when Craig Loston was injured, had five tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage, and one quarterback-hurry.
LSU MISSED SCORING OPPORTUNITIES
There were none. LSU got the ball in UAB territory seven times and scored touchdowns on each occasion. The Tigers had three red-zone opportunities and scored a touchdown each time.
LSU CRITICAL MISTAKES
The lone major offensive mistake was a fumble by Landry as he was stripped following a pass reception. That turnover led to the Blazers' second touchdown in the second quarter. Cornerback Jalen Mills took a bad angle on Reaves' 11-yard touchdown run. He was also beaten by Nelson for a 41-yard touchdown pass from Brown after Landry's fumble.
KEY STATISTICS
LSU averaged more than eight yards per play as it finished with 445 yards on just 54 snaps. Mettenberger and Anthony Jennings, who completed his only pass, were a combined 17-of-20 for 293 yards. For the second straight week, the Tigers were very good on third downs - going 4-of-8 against UAB. Brown, who passed for more than 300 yards in the Blazers' opener against Troy, threw for just 136 yards Saturday. Nelson, who had 199 yards in receiving yards against Troy, was held to 42 yards on three catches.
NOTES
WHAT THE HEAD COACH HAD TO SAY
LSU coach Les Miles: "We have had a lot of games against a lot of teams that came down to the wire. It's nice to have a game where you really distance yourself from your opponent and you play quality football, for the most part, for four quarters. For a lot of young players, they went away with a very significant victory. The goal of today was to play four quarters of fine football. We fell short of that some, but I think we can improve. We're 2-0 and I'm looking forward to the next contests."
NEXT UP
