LSU’S PLAYER OF THE GAME

After going hitless in Tuesday’s loss at UNO, Deichmann bounced back with two extra-base hits against Hofstra. Deichmann added a double down the rightfield line in the fifth. Deichmann is 6-for-16 through five games.

Deichmann’s comments: “That home run was easily the furthest I’ve hit a ball. There have been some pretty lengthy ones, but that one tops them all. I have hit some off the Intimidator, but never over it. The pitch was a little above the belt. It was good for us to bounce back after losing (Tuesday) night.”

Jordan started in leftfield. . .Bryce Adams (0-for-2) and Jordan (0-for-3) were the only starters without a hit. . .With his single in the seventh, Slaughter remained the only Tigers player with a hit in each of the first five games. . .Jordan Romero played in his first game as he caught the last two innings. . .Woley collected his first career hit with a run-scoring double in the eighth inning. . .Todd Peterson was quite impressive in his two innings as he set down six batters in a row – one by strikeout. . .Nick Bush, who missed all last season with an injury, made his first LSU appearance on the mound in the eighth. FROM THE LOCKER ROOM

Coach Paul Mainieri’s comments: “We don’t like losing streaks. I challenged the guys before the game. This was not about our opponents. It’s on our guys to prove that we are a team that takes it one game at a time. I felt we played pretty good at UNO. We just had two bad innings and UNO hit the ball well. I didn’t want the guys to get down on themselves. I wanted them to be crisp (Wednesday) – show a lot of hustle and a lot of energy. It was a good solid win.”

UP NEXT

LSU will play host to Maryland at The Box in the opener of a three-game series Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central. The Terrapins (1-2) lost games to Ball State and Louisville in a tournament at Clearwater (Fla.) last weekend. The LSU-Maryland game will be available on the SEC Digital Network.
