Rewind: Ole Miss 5, LSU 1

Auston Bousfield had four hits and drove in three runs as Ole Miss squared its Southeastern Conference series against LSU with a 5-1 victory Friday night at Swayze Field in Oxford.

HOW THEY SCORED

Ole Miss first inning - Braxton Lee and Bousfield singled. Lee scored on a single by Austin Anderson. OLE MISS 1, LSU 0

LSU third inning - With one out, Mark Laird singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Chris Trent. After Alex Bregman struck out, Laird scored when the third baseman Anderson made an error on Kade Scivicque's ground ball. LSU 1, OLE MISS 1

Ole Miss third inning - Lee and Bousfield singled. Both runners moved up a base on a ground out to second baseman Danny Zardon by Anderson. Lee scored on a ground out to Zardon by Will Allen. OLE MISS 2, LSU 1

Ole Miss fourth inning - Sikes Orvis walked. Orvis was safe at second when third baseman Christian Ibarra made a throwing error on Preston Overbey's ground ball. Errol Robinson struck out. Orvis was thrown out at the plate by pitcher Jared Poche on a squeeze bunt attempt by J.B. Woodman. A walk to Lee loaded the bases. Overbey and Woodman scored on a single by Bousfield. OLE MISS 4, LSU 1

Ole Miss seventh inning - With one out, Bousfield hit a home run over the leftfield fence. OLE MISS 5, LSU 1

LSU WASTED SCORING OPPORTUNITIES

First inning - With one out, Laird singled and Bregman walked. Scivicque flied out to the centerfielder and Chris Chinea flied out to the leftfielder.

Seventh inning - With two out, Zardon and Sean McMullen singled. Laird struck out.

Eighth inning - Bregman singled and advanced to second on Scivicque's ground out to the second baseman. Pinch-hitter Tyler Moore and Ibarra struck out.

TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYER

Laird had his third consecutive two-hit game. He had singles in the first and third innings. Laird, who scored LSU's only run, struck out with two runners on base and two out in the seventh. He hit into a double play in his other plate appearance.

STARTING PITCHER

It wasn't pretty, but Poche would have allowed just two runs in six innings were it not for a throwing error by Ibarra. The miscue by Ibarra in the fourth inning set up the two runs which put Ole Miss on top 4-1. Poche had problems with the first two batters in the Rebels lineup - Lee and Bousfield. Lee had two singles and a walk and scored two runs. Bousfield had three hits, including a two-run single in the fourth. Poche minimized the damage in both the first and third innings. With two runners on base in the first, he retired three consecutive hitters - Allen and Brantley Bell on fly balls and Orvis on a ground ball. With a runner at third and two out in the third, Poche got Bell to ground out to the shortstop Bregman. Poche set down the final seven batters he faced. He gave up four runs and seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Poche suffered his third loss of the season - all in SEC road games.

BULLPEN

Three relief pitchers were used over the last two innings. Cody Glenn allowed a solo homer by Bousfield with one out in the seventh. Brady Domangue took over for Glenn with a runner at first and two out in the seventh. Domangue retired Bell on a fly ball to the rightfielder Laird. Henri Faucheux threw a scoreless eighth. He permitted one batter to reach base - Orvis on a leadoff-single.

NOTES

Coach Paul Mainieri used a different lineup against the southpaw pitcher Trent. Scivicque started at first base for just the fourth time all season. Zardon, who had not played second base until Tuesday against USM, started there Friday. Jared Foster started in leftfield for the first time since the Georgia series. Chinea was the catcher and McMullen was the designated hitter. . .No player other than Laird had more than one hit. The Tigers had seven hits - all singles - off Trent, who pitched seven-plus innings. Trent was a walk-on at LSU two years ago. He was dismissed from the team and went to Delgado Community College. Trent then signed with Ole Miss. . .Seth Weathersby retired all six batter she faced - four by strikeouts. . . Scivicque continued his struggles at the plate as he went 0-for-4. He has three hits in his last 26 official at-bats. . .Ibarra was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. . .Three Tigers were used as pinch-hitters - Moore, Jake Fraley and Chris Sciambra. All three struck out against Weathersby. . .Bregman extended his hitting streak to four games with a single in the eighth. Bregman is 6-for-18 during the hitting streak. . .Conner Hale, who had five hits in the previous two games was not in the lineup. . .LSU stranded eight runners, four in scoring position. The Tigers were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. . .The Tigers are 29-10-1 overall, 9-7-1 in the SEC. LSU is in fourth place in the overall conference standings - two games behind Alabama. . .The Rebels are 30-10, 10-7 in the SEC. Ole Miss is in third place in the overall league standings. . .The paid attendance was 10,061.

"Jared Poche gave us another courageous effort and really battled throughout the game. He wasn't quite as sharp as he usually is with his command. But, he competed and kept us within striking distance. Unfortunately, we didn't play well enough to win and couldn't generate the offense we needed. To win in a place like this against a good team, you have to play very well. We didn't do that tonight. We'll look forward to tomorrow with a chance to win the series in a tough road environment."

LSU will play Ole Miss in the deciding game of the series at Swayze Field in Oxford on Saturday at 1 p.m. Mainieri is undecided on the starting pitcher for the Tigers. The LSU-Ole Miss game will be broadcast on FSS.
