Rewind: Yale 8, LSU 7

A throwing error by pitcher Parker Bugg allowed the winning run to score in the eighth inning as Yale rallied from a six-run deficit to salvage the final game of the three-game series with an 8-7 victory against LSU at The Box on Sunday afternoon.

HOW THEY SCORED

LSU first inning - Sean McMullen walked and Mark Laird singled. A bunt single by Alex Bregman loaded the bases. McMullen scored when Hale forced Bregman at second base on his ground ball to the shortstop. Laird scored on a single by Kade Scivicque. Hale scored on a single by Christian Ibarra. After Andrew Stevenson popped out to the third baseman, Scivicque scored on a single by Tyler Moore. LSU 4, YALE 0

LSU fourth inning - Moore reached on a two-base error by centerfielder Green Campbell. Moore moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Chinea. Moore scored on a triple by McMullen. Laird's sacrifice fly to the leftfielder drove home McMullen. LSU 6, YALE 0

Yale fifth inning - Cale Hanson singled and Campbell singled. An infield hit by Richard Slenker loaded the bases. Hanson scored on a single by Robert Baldwin. Campbell scored on a single by Nate Adams. Slenker scored when Eric Hsieh forced Adams at second base on his ground ball to Bregman at shortstop. Baldwin scored on Jacob Hunter's sacrifice fly to Laird in rightfield. LSU 6, YALE 4

LSU fifth inning - Scivicque singled and Ibarra was hit by a pitch. A bunt single by Stevenson loaded the bases. Scivicque scored when Moore hit into a 6-4-3 double play. LSU 7, YALE 4

Yale sixth inning - Brent Lawson singled. Lawson was safe at second when the third baseman Ibarra made a throwing error on Hanson's ground ball. Lawson and Hanson moved up to third and second, respectively, on Campbell's sacrifice bunt. Lawson was thrown out at the plate on Slenker's ground ball to pitcher Nate Fury. Hanson scored on a single by Baldwin. LSU 7, YALE 5

Yale seventh inning - Hsieh walked and advanced to third on a double by Hunter. Hsieh and Hunter scored on a double by Kevin Fortunato. YALE 7, LSU 7

Yale eighth inning - Campbell reached on a bunt single. Campbell moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Slenker and advanced to third on Baldwin's ground ball to Bregman at shortstop. Campbell scored when Bugg made a throwing error on Adams' ground ball. YALE 8, LSU 7

LSU WASTED SCORING OPPORTUNITIES

Seventh inning - With one out, Scivicque singled. Ibarra singled, but pinch-runner Jake Fraley was thrown out at third base by the leftfielder Hsieh. Stevenson was hit by a pitch. Moore lined out to the second baseman.

Eighth inning - With two out, Laird doubled. Bregman lined out to the centerfielder.

Ninth inning - With two out, Ibarra doubled. Pinch-runner Jared Foster advanced to third on an infield hit by Stevenson. After Stevenson stole second base, Moore flied out to the rightfielder.

TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYER

Ibarra reached base in all five plate appearances with two singles, a double, a walk and a hit batsman. Ibarra drove home a run with an infield hit in the first. With the score tied the seventh, Ibarra delivered a single. However, Fraley made a base-running mistake and was thrown out at third base on the play. In the ninth, Ibarra nearly hit a game-tying home run. But, the ball hit the top of the fence and Ibarra had to settle for a double.

STARTING PITCHER

Cody Glenn cruised through the first four innings as he allowed just three base runners. Glenn hit Adams in the first, but he got Hsieh to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Adams and Hsieh led off the fourth with singles. Glenn didn't allow a run as he struck out Hunter and Fortunato and retired Lawson on a comebacker to the mound. Yale scored four times off Glenn in the fifth. The first five batters singled to bring in two runs. Glenn got the next two batters out, but runners scored on both plays. When Glenn allowed a leadoff single to Lawson in the sixth, he was replaced by Fury.

BULLPEN

Yale scored a run in the sixth with Fury on the mound due to an error by Ibarra. Fury, who allowed a single, got Adams to hit into a force play with two runners on base and two out in the sixth. Hunter Devall was called on to start the seventh and failed to retire any of the three batters he faced. Devall issued a leadoff walk to Hsieh before yielding back-to-back doubles by Hunter and Fortunato. Bugg took over for Devall with the go-ahead run at second and no outs. Bugg got out of the inning thanks to a missed bunt on a squeeze play. However, Bugg wasn't as fortunate in the eighth. A leadoff bunt single by Campbell turned into the winning run. With Campbell at third and two out, Bugg fielded Adams' grounder, but his throw went off the glove of Moore at first base and Campbell scored. Lefthander Zac Person retired Hsieh on a ground ball back to the mound to end the eighth. Kurt McCune started the ninth, but immediately got in trouble on a single and a walk. After a sacrifice bunt, coach Paul Mainieri went to Joe Broussard to get a strikeout. Broussard got Hanson on a fly ball to Laird, who threw Hunter out at the plate. LSU relievers gave up three runs and five hits in four innings with two walks and no strikeouts. Bugg was the losing pitcher.

NOTES

Chinea, who caught Friday's game, was back behind the plate Sunday. Hale was at second base with Moore playing first base. Scivicque was the designated hitter. . .Hale and Chinea were the only starters who didn't collect a hit. Hale, who was 0-for-5, had his hitting streak end at five games. . .Stevenson had two infield hits and extended his hitting streak to nine games. Laird also had two hits and extended his hitting streak to five games. . .Scivicque had his second three-hit game of the series. . .Bregman had his second straight two-hit game. . .Chris Sciambra was used as a pinch-hitter in the ninth and flied out to the rightfielder. . .Fraley, a pinch-runner for Scivicque, made a mistake when he was thrown out at third base on Ibarra's hit in the seventh. Fraley ran through the stop sign from third base coach Will Davis. . .LSU stranded ten runners, seven in scoring position. The Tigers were 7-for-16 with runners in scoring position. . .Yale starting pitcher Michael Coleman gave up six runs and seven hits in four innings. Three Bulldogs relievers - Chris Moates, Chris Lanham and Hanson - gave up one run and seven hits in five innings. LSU was 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position against the Yale bullpen. Both of the hits were infield hits by Stevenson which didn't drive in a run. . .Errors by Ibarra and Bugg resulted in two unearned runs. . .Yale put the leadoff batter on base in seven of nine innings. The Bulldogs scored runs in four of those frames. . .Both of the Tigers' defeats have come in games started by Glenn. . .LSU failed to sweep Princeton, another Ivy league school, in 2011. Princeton salvaged the last game of the three-game series by the same 8-7 score. . .The Tigers are 9-2, while Yale is 1-2. . .The paid attendance was 10,283. The actual crowd was 4,546.

"We have to learn that it's different when you play a team three days in a row. When you beat a team so handedly the first game, the natural case is to lay down. I don't think we let down today. We jumped out to a 6-0 lead. We were playing great defense, especially on the left side of the infield. Ibarra and Bregman were putting on a clinic. Then, in the fifth inning, those same ground balls got through and they got back in the game. We just started not playing good enough. We weren't playing bad. You see the other team gaining confidence and momentum. You start smoking balls at guys. Ibarra hits what looks like a game-tying home run and it hits the top of the wall. Sciamabra, Moore and Bregman hit line drives right at them. Some of it was our own, some of it was Yale and some of it was the bad breaks in baseball."

"Cody Glenn was good and bad. For four innings, he pitched great. He got a lot of ground balls. In the fifth inning, he gives up five hits. You hope he doesn't give up a six-run lead. Then, he gives up a leadoff hit in the sixth. I wasn't pleased that Devall walked the leadoff batter (in the seventh) or that McCune walked a batter in the ninth."

UP NEXT

LSU will play Northwestern State at Brown-Stroud Field in Natchitoches on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Demons swept three games from Southern this weekend. Jared Poche (2-0) will be the starting pitcher for the Tigers.
