Roy Kramer Announces Retirement
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Southeastern Conference Commissioner Roy Kramer announced his retirement from his current post at a press conference held at the SEC Headquarters on Tuesday. No immediate timetable has been set for a replacement and Kramer will continue as the SEC Commissioner until a successor is found.
Kramer came to the Southeastern Conference on Jan. 10, 1990, as the league’s sixth commissioner. Prior to his appointment in the SEC, Kramer served as Director of Athletics at Vanderbilt University for 12 seasons (1978-90). He was the head football coach at Central Michigan University for 11 seasons (1967-77), posting a 83-32-2 (.718) record. Kramer was an assistant at CMU for two seasons before being promoted to head coach.

Before a career in collegiate athletics, Kramer served as a high school football coach in Michigan from 1954-64, serving has a head coach for the latter nine seasons of that tenure.
Kramer obtained his bachelor’s degree from Maryville (Tenn.) College in 1953 and added his master’s degree at the University of Michigan in 1954. Upon receiving his postgraduate degree, Kramer spent three years in the U.S. Army, rising from a non-commissioned officer to a first lieutenant in the European NATO Command.
The Maryville, Tenn. native, was born Oct. 30, 1929. He is married to the former Sara Jo Emert. They have three children (Steve, Sara Gray and Jane) and six grandchildren.
