Saahdiq Charles returns to practice, but several starters absent on Monday

BATON ROUGE, La. — Coach Ed Orgeron labeled Lloyd Cushenberry as “very questionable” during Monday’s press conference, but there were several other starters absent from LSU’s Monday practice.

Cornerback Greedy Williams, linebacker Jacob Phillips, safety Eric Monroe, tight end Thaddeus Moss, nose tackle Ed Alexander and offensive tackles Badara Traore and Cameron Wire were also missing from practice. Cushenberry, whose status will be determined later on in the week, was an observer from the sidelines.

Saahdiq Charles, who has started two games for the Tigers at left tackle but has missed each of the past two games for undisclosed reasons, returned to action on Monday. However, it was not a padded practice.

Charles worked at left tackle along with Adrian Magee, who returned from injury last week and started in his place against Ole Miss. Donavaughn Campbell, who drew his first career start in place of an injured Garrett Brumfield, split reps with freshman Chasen Hines at left guard.

Only freshman Cole Smith saw action at center during Monday’s session, though Orgeron said the team is going to evaluate a Plan B at the position if Cushenberry can’t give it a go against the Gators on Saturday.

Stevens back at safety

After spending time at outside linebacker in preparation for the Auburn and Louisiana Tech games, Jacoby Stevens returned to practice with the safeties on Monday. Stevens has played sparingly the past few weeks after rotating in with the defensive backs the first two weeks of the season.

Kary Vincent Jr. and Terrence Alexander, who rotate in as a hybrid nickel safety, also worked out with coach Bill Busch and the safeties, who emphasized high-pointing the football during the media-allotted portion of practice.

McMath with the receivers

Racey McMath saw his first action of the season against the Rebels, snaring two catches for 42 yards as a hybrid receiver/move-tight end in Saturday’s contest. On Monday, McMath continued to work out with the entire receiving corps.

Orgeron looking over defensive line

Orgeron joined defensive line coach Dennis Johnson with the linemen and edge-rushers. Pass rush from the front four has been an emphasis in practice over the past few weeks as LSU looks to improve its pressure.
