In short, tickets to this game will be the most expensive we have ever seen for ANY college football game at SeatGeek. As it stands now, the average price for tickets to the game is $1,837.36. These average prices are 35% higher than tickets to last year's BCS National Title Game between Auburn and Oregon, which saw average ticket prices of $1,352.62. Some other "most expensive" rankings for this game:
In SeatGeek's history of tracking ticket prices, only 2 events have registered higher average ticket prices - the 2011 Super Bowl ($3,067.13) and Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals ($1,927.55)
Most expensive ticket to a college sporting event since SeatGeek has begun to track college sports
Most expensive ticket ever for an event in New Orleans - the next closest are tickets for this year's Saints NFC Title Game (contingent on them hosting that game), for which tickets are currently running at $599 on the secondary market
As for the underlying reasons that are driving these high prices - many of the same factors that drove ticket prices for first LSU-Alabama game hold true for much the same in this game. The game is effectively a home game for LSU fans in the Superdome, and it's not too lengthy of a road trip for Alabama fans, either. But at this point, fans are likely to pay whatever it takes to get into a game of this magnitude with the title on the line. So often, you hear fans say that it's a "once-in-a-lifetime" chance to see their team win a title (though if you're older than 4-years old, that statement doesn't hold true--at least for these two teams!), so that mentality certainly helps drive prices as high as they're going currently.
One more interesting piece of analysis--we actually went to look at our website's traffic statistics to get a better sense of geographical where the most traffic was coming from to our BCS Title Game events page.
In a finding that was quite surprising to me, we've actually seen the most traffic from Alabama and not Louisiana, despite the fact that the game is in New Orleans. I've included a graph below that has a nationwide heat map of where traffic to our BCS Title Game event page is originating, and a table showing the top 5 states as a percentage of total traffic to the page.
