Shelvin coming to LSU as academic redshirt

Crowley (La.) Notre Dame High school nose tackle Tyler Shelvin will receive a scholarship at LSU, but he will not be eligible for the 2017 season.

Shelvin is considered an academic redshirt, a term initiated by the NCAA a year ago. Shelvin did not meet all of the requirements to be a full qualifier. Shelvin can receive athletics aid and can practice with the team. However, Shelvin is not eligible for competition this season.

There are two differences in the requirements for being a full qualifier and an academic redshirt. To be a full qualifier, a student-athlete needs 10 of his 16 core courses to be locked in before the start of his seventh semester. Seven of the ten core courses must be in English, Math and the Natural Sciences.

A student-athlete who did not have 10 of his 16 core courses locked in before the beginning of his senior year would be an academic redshirt. A repeated course after the start of the senior year can be used to meet the requirements of an academic redshirt, but not for a full qualifier.

A full qualifier needs a core GPA of 2.3 to go along with a combined ACT score of 75. A student-athlete who does not have a core GPA of 2.3 can be considered an academic redshirt with a core GPA of 2.0 to go along with a combined ACT score of 86.

Apparently, Shelvin did not satisfy at least one of these two academic guidelines to be a full qualifier. Therefore, he is an academic redshirt.
